Do calories really matter when it comes to weight loss and weight gain?  Not so much.  Probably one of the biggest misconceptions out there is calories affect how much weight you gain or lose.

False!

The term calorie is actually used to describe a chemical reaction, a unit of energy used to increase one gram of water by one degree Celsius.

So what the hell does that mean to you, if I were to tell you that in a conversation?  Absolutely nothing, right!

It is not so much that calories don’t matter, but the type of calories that you are consuming.  If you are eating 8,000 calories from Doritos and Twinkles, then yes, they would cause you to gain weight and cause some health issues.

But on the other hand, say you are eating a diet that is low in carbohydrates (bread, pastas, rice, potatoes, etc) and high in healthy fats (olive oil, canola oil, fish oil, nuts), protein (beef, chicken, fish, turkey), and vegetables and some fruits.   Then calories are a very small factor when it comes weight loss and weight gain if you are eating more like this.

The fact is when you consume a diet that is low in carbohydrates versus low in calories, you reap more benefits and still get to eat a ton of great delicious foods.

Which sounds better to you? Option 1: Counting calories, weighing and measure every little piece of food that goes in your mouth and starving by the end of the day.  Option 2: Cutting down carb loaded foods that are harming your health and basically eating as much meat, vegetables, nuts, butter, oil as your little heart desires.

I don’t know about you but option 2 seems like the better deal.

More research studies are showing that low carb eating is the most efective way to lose weight, improve insulin function, improve blood sugar levels, prevent certain cancers, and improve cardiovascular health.

If you decide you’d rather count calories, you will still lose some weight and have slight improvements with your health but not as much as the low carb route.

Plus low-calorie diets just plain suck!
